One of POP's greatest achievements is that you're never quite if you can actually pull something off until you've given it a try - which results in quite a few moments which can literally be described as cliffhangers. He then digitised the footage and use the results as a basis for the animation of game's main characters - to such a successful degree that you eventually believe that you can make the tiny pixellated hero do just about anything that you ask of him.
'Mechner archieved this degree of realism by the unfeasibly simple wheeze of taking his younger brother to the playground and videoing his every movement.
